Dear reader letter.
Super Wants: Nonbinary Byleth, though female is fine if you're not down to clown for the trans HCs. I love trans HCs, for literally anyone and everyone, especially nb stuff. I love Dorothea, Lysithea, and El with complicated gender feelings because of their trauma. Trans women? Nonbinary? Love it bb. Claude being nb, trans of any kind, is also wonderful. Once I saw a trans lady Ferdie thing and it made me cry. Know I love trans stuff. But - if you are not comfortable with including that, I understand, and don't worry about it! Other super wants - I love meta and content that contends with deep-set trauma. All my options here have some of my favorite expressions of trauma in the game (I know, everyone has it, but these are just my tops), and I'm invested in how that informs their personality and choices, whether it be in a more narrative setting or in a relationship-based setting. I do love AUs dealing with song and dance (especially ballroom dance), I do like supernatural-based concepts(being alive and dead at the same time, not quite a zombie or a vampire, but impeded and frustrated nonetheless), I do love Utena or Princess Tutu AUs if you know those and are also a weirdo like me. I like a lot of stuff. I love art and writing, I love deep blues, tbh seeing El or Doro in a suit or dress would also murder me! Imagine. I'm imagining, and I am dying
Character and ship stuff:
I'm all in for lesbian-leaning Dorothea who acts in compulsory het for the sake of survival (though I will say I'm always intrigued by endings where she marries a man and still likes him, because I'm invested in her choices and how they can benefit her even as a gay woman in a hostile setting). My actual otp is somehow Byleth/Dorothea I love for this to contend with her having a relationship with Byleth, and even getting in the way of it at times, because of her desperation to never be destitute again. I would love school-phase longing and sick feelings about the way she says "Byleth sees through her." Biting back her words. Dorothea is my favorite character and one of my favorite things about her is that while she is loving and kind (her concern for Petra and Bernie makes me cry), how harsh and unforgiving and even hateful she can be is so interesting and tragic. I love how angry she is toward characters like Sylvain and Ferdinand, I love her deepset bitterness having to depend on rich men, and I love how that intensifies her want to protect other women in her life. More than anything, I love her disbelief at a "hero" like Byleth loving her, when Dorothea herself is so desperate to help and protect the weak, despite being a part of a war that in many ways goes against everything she is as a person. So I'd love to see really meta in canon shit with Dorothea, especially if it contends with her feelings for Byleth. I love vignettes and missed chances and soft touches. Further, I am wholly invested in Edelgard/Dorothea, particularly if you chose to write something about Dorothea challenging aspects of Edelgard's reasons to go to war. I am interested in AUs as well, particularly based in theater, indie music, and the politics of ballroom dancing. I would also love solo content of Dorothea or non-ship content.
Byleth is really troublesome to ask for as they're mostly a self-insert, but my big Gains of fondness for them come from 1) how much Edelgard desperately wants their guidance and love and 2) how unsettled and interested Dorothea is in them. I would also be interested in content of Edelgard and Byleth learning how to be people together, considering how messed up Edelgard's life and trauma have been, and Dorothea painstakingly showing the work she's put into seeming to be a regular and reasonable person despite layers of trauma informing her pragmatism.
Lysithea is here because I love that dual-crest trauma baby! More than anything, I Hunger for good Edelgard/Lysithea content. Content about them both struggling under the weight of lowered life expectancy, chronic illness, these things that make life so much harder but you have to hide and cut away how much of a difficult time you are having. Content about them managing to get rid of their crests, and having longer lives, but still having to contend with the way that their bodies have been scarred and harmed by experimentation and still having disabilities and sickness! Hey. I love that shit. Especially since they would be on the level through figuring it out - since Lysithea refuses lies and is so brusquely honest to Edelgard, when El has grown up as next in line to a massive future and has always had to struggle to see through other people's lies. Lysithea is easy to trust because she doesn't Care about nobility and she has the obvious truth carried on her, physically, every day. Pre-war content of them together and finding out more about each other over a year? During-war content? Did you know Lysithea can be spared and recruited to the Black Eagles during the war phase, and I think she's the only one, and that gets to me /so bad/ considering Edelgard's usual decisions. You can let people live but then there's this woman, this young woman, that Edelgard could not refuse. God. Look. Look. IT's so much. Imagine Lysithea doing the same to Edelgard in a route where El is supposed to die. Imagine Claude pretending like he doesn't notice, and Lysithea knowing he has to know, but being too caught up in her desperation to know why they both have two crests, and why the Empire didn't just do this to a lowly noble family, and why Edelgard chose to do all of this, and if they could just maybe connect. Imagine Lysithea telling Claude what she believes El's weaknesses have to be, knowing she has to crests like herself. IMAGINE. I'm rolling on the floor. It's so much. Hi. There's so much that can be said about these two.
Also I will say with Edel/Lys, I do like AUs. I would like a modern au, I would love a weird Smart Kids who are struggling not to burn out AU, I would love the two of them plotting to take over the world together while knowing there is so much that holds them back and tells them no. I want them to do The Soft Kiss after being angry about how bullshit their lives are. I want them to hhhhhave.... each other ........................ does a cry.
Claude? Claude. Why is claude so good. I'm super super interested in Claude & Edelgard friendship - particularly if its edged with mistrust and the fact that if Edelgard would reach out to other class leaders, maybe things could have gone better. If Claude was the one to secretly pass word around school that the Church was not to be trusted, and Edelgard wanted to confront him, and so on. I'm so interested in the two of them locked in a dance of "Don't kiss and tell," where El has been burned so many times, and Claude honestly has too. Claude knowing someone like the next Emperor shouldn't be trustworthy, knowing how easily she could use his knowledge and then throw him and his plans under the bus. Edelgard knowing how easily she could be betrayed and imprisoned - or worse. In addition, I'm super interested in an Edel/Lys/&Claude piece with the whole set-up of the war happening, Edel expecting him to kill her, and Claude & Lys plotting together to find a way to save everyone and end the war early. In general, I'd love a vignette sort of piece that just allows for scenes and dialogue between Edel and Claude in meaningful ways. I like them both a lot. I want Claude to be honest to Edel in ways that Dimitri can't, because Dimi is so locked up in his own anger. It's not Claude's job to help or save emperors or people who start wars. But I'm interested in him trying to find the lines where its worthwhile to see humanity in a classmate when he's spent so much of his life playing the game to get ahead in a world that has been more than unkind to him.
I honestly want him to ask her the question of - "Tell me, Edelgard. You really think everything will be just peachy if everywhere's the Empire? Or that you can wash away its sordid history all on your own?" You can't follow the old ways to find a just answer in this world. Have to find something new - be someone new - someone the world has never seen before. Claude is great and works way too hard for so much grief so also if you wanted a modern AU or a non-tragic AU to write, I'm so down for that with Claude and Edel and Lys friendship.
